Strategies and Techniques in the Prevention of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) at Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City: A Major Rehabilitation Hospital in the Middle East

Abstract
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is one of the most challenging complications in a rehabilitation facility especially in Spinal Cord Injury patients who are on a bladder management program such as intermittent catheterization or indwelling catheterization program. The risk to develop UTI is extremely high in this specific patient group. Rehabilitation nurses must be fully equipped to fight the battle against infection prevention and control in order to reduce Urinary Tract Infection rate. Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City or “The City” is committed in delivering safe quality care to all person served through an interdisciplinary team approach. Several strategies and techniques are in place to ensure winning the battle. “The City” has successfully benchmarked their Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) rate with the Center for Disease Control - National Healthcare Safety Network (CDC-NHSN) and has maintained an outstanding rate signifying the success of the its intensive campaign against CAUTI.
